"Cutting Through the Red Tape"

After three years of hard work and perseverance in "cutting through the red tape," Building Futures with Women and Children will be breaking ground on Bessie Coleman Court, a 52 unit transitional/permanent housing development located on Alameda Point, the former Naval Air Station. This program will aid women and children who are formerly homeless and survivors of domestic violence. The clients living at Bessie Coleman Court will continue case management with BFWC staff and have access to the myriad of other services provided by the Alameda Point Collaborative. The services provided assist the women in finding the resources they need to further their education, secure and retain employment, receive quality health care and therapy, to name a few. The children living at Bessie Coleman Court will have access to fully subsidized childcare and recreational programming. In the Bay Area housing market, this program will be a significant opportunity for many women who are looking for a safe and affordable place to continue their work in becoming independent and capable of caring for themselves and their children.

This program has been generously funded by many Bay Area foundations, corporations, and individuals. We would like the convey our thanks to the Kresge Foundation; S.H. Cowell Foundation; the William G. Irwin Charity Foundation; Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund; Wells Fargo Foundation; Citigroup Foundation; Bank of the West; Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation; Bay Area Regional Initiative; Federal Home Loan Bank; City of Alameda; City of San Leandro; County of Alameda; US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development; and all of the amazing individual donors who have supported us in making this program a reality. On behalf of the women and children who are turning their lives around with hard work and dedication, we thank you.

We invite all interested parties to join us on Friday, July 27th for the groundbreaking ceremony.
